There is something beautiful and mysterious about music. When we sing songs together as a church, we can all come together as one group and be unified both in heart and mind.
Music during the week, though, can also help us to continue to connect with God and remember that he is with us every day.
In 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Paul encourages us to “pray without ceasing.” Worship can be a good way to remind ourselves to be in constant communication with God.
I want to share just a few ways that music can help us grow in our faith and then give you some practical tips for good ways you can incorporate worship music into your daily routine.
1. Worship Music Encourages You
We live in a world that is often negative, critical, or unkind. Spending time listening to music that praises God can lift our spirits and remind us that even though we may face situations that feel hopeless, God is still right beside us, and he is ultimately in control.
There is an old hymn that says,
“Many things about tomorrow,
I don't seem to understand;
But I know who holds tomorrow,
And I know who holds my hand."
2. Worship Music Helps Us Remember
Music has an amazing way of helping us remember things. You might not be able to remember where you left your car keys… But I bet you can remember the lyrics to "don't stop believing" (and now you probably can't get that song out of your head… You're welcome!).
Music can be a way of helping us remember the truth of who God is and what he has done for us.
Verse 3 from the song “In Christ Alone” says,
“There in the ground His body lay
Light of the world by darkness slain
Then bursting forth in glorious day.
Up from the grave he rose again.
And as He stands in victory
Sin's curse has lost its grip on me.
For I am His and He is mine.
Bought with the precious blood of Christ”
3. God speaks through worship music
God is always speaking to us, but often our world is too noisy for us to hear him. When we make intentional time to focus our minds on God, it becomes easier to hear his voice. Worship music can be a great way to drown out the noise of life and help us to focus on God.
I can’t explain it, but often, times when I have worship music on, and I just listen, I feel like I can hear what God is wanting me to hear.
So now let me give a few practical steps for how you can incorporate worship music into your everyday life.
Create a shared playlist on Spotify or Apple Music with a couple of friends where you can share songs that inspire you.
Find a time in your schedule where listening to worship music would work well. You could listen to music while exercising or driving in your car.
Make coming to church a priority in your life. Take advantage of the time that is given in services to hear the word of God preached and for us to sing our praises to God.
I think you will find that putting your focus in the right place will make all the difference in the quality of your day.
